The Future of Farming is on the Farm

Increasing crop production and farmer profitability to feed an expanding, often food-insecure, population

The Indoor Farm Foundation helps improve food security, farm yield, and rural economics through commercial greenhouses owned and operated by the American farmer.

Facts

  • 44 million people in the United States are food insecure, of which 13 million are children. Families with children are more likely to face hunger (source: USDA)

  • The United States currently imports over 30% of our vegetables and 50% of our fruit (source: USDA)

  • Globally, 56% food gap between crop calories produced in 2010 and those needed by 2050. Under current approach, an incremental area 2x the size of India is required. Rapid deforestation is the current method to address this issue, which greatly exacerbates global climate change (source: World Resources Institute)

  • In 2023 there were 1.89 million US farms (down 7% since 2017 and accelerating). Why? Farmers are facing multiple challenges, including urban sprawl encroaching on agricultural land, declining commodity prices, rising input costs, an aging farmer population, and more appealing and less demanding job opportunities in urban areas.

  • Climate change increases chances of wildfires, drought, flooding; all of which effect farm yield. Fertilizer and pesticide run-off reduces water quality and can kill fish and shellfish.
